Injection Compression molding involves injecting plastic while the mold is slightly open, then applying clamp tonnage to complete the filling of the cavity. The technology is especially attractive for lid molding projects.
This is a cutaway of the single cavity prototype mold showing the gap between the core and cavity prior to the injection phase of the process. The tool looks very similar to a regular injection mold. It is critical to maintain the precise gap between the cavity and core for each cycle.
The benefits of Injection Compression molding:
- Dramatically lower fill pressure
- Weight savings up to 24%
Successful Injection Compression projects require:
- Fine control over individual cavity metering
- Absolute hot runner balance
- Advanced mold design, including mold alignment
